Spider-Man is back. Our wall crawling wonder was last seen in Long Way From Home. He was left with a major dilemma. His identity was exposed by Mysterio. In this film, Spider-Man, must try to solve his problem. Tom Holland gives his all in his third film, as our web spinning hero. The only person Peter Parker thinks can help him is Dr. Strange, (Benedict Cumberbatch). He convinces Strange to help him. Unfortunately, the spell goes wrong. It causes a rift in the multiverse. This brings forth a number of Spider-Man villains. Fortunately, it also brings two displaced web-swingers, Andrew Garfield and Toby Maguire. This really brings the film together. It is a great shot ,with all three of the Spider-men against the moonlight; preparing for battle.
This movie shows the audience what true comic book heroes do. Spider-Man is shown trying to get as many people to safety, as possible When Dr. Octopus appears, it is a a gripping scene, starting out with cars being destroyed, and the bridge crumbling. This is caused by Octopus’ rampage. Peter Parker’s selflessness is also shown. He tries to persuade the Vice Chancellor of MIT, (Paula Newsome), to get his friends into the school. Peter, M.J. (Zendaya) and Ned Leeds, (Jacob Batalon), were rejected because of the events in the previous film.
Also in the movie are Jon Favreau and Marisa Tormei. They reprise their roles as Happy Hogan and May Parker. They give comic relief to this dark film. A humorous scene is when Happy sees his doorbell camera showing a gathering of super villains. There is also Happy and May’s on again off again romance. Jon Favreau has been involved with the MCU, since starring in and directing the Iron Man movies. His character’s presence is a welcome distraction from the film’s darker moments. Happy is however affected by the darkest part of the film.
The bad guys as always play a central role in any Spider-Man movie. The two who are exceptional are Dr. Octopus, (Alfred Molina) and The Green Goblin, (Willem Dafoe). One, Dr. Octopus understands the concept of working for the greater good. The Goblin does not. He only understands evil. The scene that stands out is the three Spider-Men, working together. They are not kicking bad guys butt. They are working as a team using their knowledge of science, to cure the bad guys. The movie works on different levels. The good guys working together to find a cure is one of the simplest. It is a surprising and terrific thing to see all three actors in the same film together.
Even though his role is diminished, J. K. Simmons appears as J. Jonah Jameson. He delights in Spider-Man being exposed. He is happy in another person’s misery. He is in the film happily calling the wall crawler a public menace. Spider-Man would be happier fighting all the bad guys in the film by himself, than hearing Jameson denounce him. J.K. Simmons is an academy award winning actor. He brings life to the egomaniacal Spider-Man hating publisher. Jameson knows that above all else Spider-Man brings ratings, and sells papers.
Spider-Man and most comic book movies, thrive on computer generated effects. This doesn’t make this movie. What makes Spider-Man is the hero’s heart and courage. This is shown several times in the movie. The most apparent example is when he goes after The Green Goblin. His heroism in The MCU is comparable to Captain America. There is one statement that sums up Spider-Man. It is what Stan Lee, his co-creator said. He is the hero who could be you.
